Chapter 11 - THE ARREST ON VOSS HILL

The panic in Warren Voss’s eyes turned into a frantic, frantic frenzy within twenty-four hours.

By 8:00 AM the following morning, three federal transport vans and four unmarked sedans pulled up the long, winding driveway of the Voss estate. The broken iron gate still hung uselessly off its hinges—a jagged metal monument to the night Samuel Reed had walked through it.

Marcus Vance stepped out of the lead sedan, accompanied by eight armed federal marshals and two forensic accountants carrying heavy silver cases.

Inside the grand mansion, Daniel Voss was throwing clothes into a leather duffel bag in his master bedroom. His face was pale, sweat pouring off his forehead, his designer suit rumpled and unbuttoned at the collar.

"Dad, we have to go!" Daniel shouted down the hallway, his voice crackling with hysteria. "The private air strip in Clayton! We can take the charter to Miami before they freeze the offshore accounts!"

"They already froze them, you idiot!" Warren’s voice echoed back from his study—flat, broken, and hollow.

Daniel ran down the curved marble staircase, stopping dead in his tracks.

The heavy mahogany front door was pushed wide open. Standing in the grand foyer—the exact spot where Daniel had stood thirty-six hours earlier mocking Samuel Reed—were four federal marshals with weapons drawn.

"Daniel Voss," Marcus Vance announced, stepping forward with an arrest warrant in his gloved hand. "You are under arrest for federal obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit tax fraud."

Daniel dropped his duffel bag. The leather clattered loudly against the marble floor.

"Wait... wait!" Daniel gasped, backing away until his heels hit the bottom stair. "This is a mistake! My father handles the company! I don't know anything about taxes! I just run the residential properties!"

"You also committed aggravated assault on Claire Reed," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper that made Daniel’s blood run cold. "And when you threatened her father on these stairs, you committed federal witness intimidation."

A marshal stepped up behind Daniel, grabbed his arm, and slammed him face-first against the carved wooden banister.

CLICK-CLACK.

The cold steel cuffs snapped tightly around Daniel’s wrists.

"Dad! Dad, help me!" Daniel screamed, his face pressed hard against the wood, tears spilling down his cheeks. "Dad, tell them!"

Warren Voss walked out of his private study slowly. He didn't have his gold-topped cane. He wore no jacket. He looked twenty years older, his silver hair uncombed, his eyes bloodshot and lifeless.

He didn't look at his son. He looked at the federal marshals filing into his study, lifting heavy file boxes, unplugging hard drives, and cataloging thirty years of stolen lives.

"It's over, Daniel," Warren whispered, his voice barely audible above the hum of the computer fans. "There's nobody left to call."
