Chapter 19 - RECKONING AND FORGIVENESS

After the courtroom cleared, Nathan stood in the marble hallway outside the central doors.

Two armed guards escorted Julian out toward the prisoner transport elevator. As Julian passed, he stopped, his ankles clanking against his leg irons. He looked up at Nathan, his eyes bloodshot and swollen with tears.

"Nate..." Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "I'm... I'm so sorry. I know you'll never forgive me."

Nathan looked at his younger brother for a long, silent moment. The anger that had burned in his chest for months had finally dissipated, leaving behind only a profound, quiet sorrow for the brother he used to know.

"I won't forget what you did, Julian," Nathan said softly, his voice firm yet devoid of malice. "And you have to serve your time for the choices you made. But I don't carry hatred for you anymore. You have to live with what you did—and I have to live for my family."

Julian nodded slowly, tears running down his cheeks as he bowed his head. "I'm glad you're alive, Nate. I really am."

The guards led Julian into the elevator, the steel doors sliding shut between them.

Clara stepped up beside Nathan, slipping her arm through his, resting her head gently against his shoulder. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Nathan said, taking a deep, clean breath of cold autumn air coming through the open courthouse windows. "I'm finally okay."
