Chapter 16 - THE FOUNDATION STONE

Six months later, spring had fully returned to the city. The pale cold light of winter had given way to warm sunlight that glinted off the harbor water and illuminated the newly laid foundation of the Riverfront Civic Center.

A massive yellow banner hung across the main steel framework: MORETTI-VANCE CIVIC PLAZA — BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE.

A crowd of hundreds had gathered for the official groundbreaking ceremony—construction workers in yellow hardhats, local community leaders, journalists, and city officials.

Elena stood at the podium, looking out over the crowd. Behind her sat her five brothers, arranged in a quiet, solid line. Dominic in his dark tailored suit; Luca reviewing a stack of real estate transfers; Gabriel casually checking monitor logs on a small tablet; Matteo conversing softly with the head of the workers' union; and Nico standing near the edge of the stage, his sharp eyes scanning the perimeter with practiced vigilance.

Elena stepped up to the microphones. Flashbulbs went off across the gallery, but her hand on the podium was steady, her expression serene and powerful.

"Fourteen months ago," Elena began, her voice echoing clearly across the speakers, "this site was a symbol of corporate greed, mistreatment of working people, and broken promises. It was owned by men who believed that power was measured by how many people you could force to bow before you."

She glanced briefly over her shoulder at Dominic, who offered a small, barely perceptible nod of pride.

"Today," Elena continued, turning back to the audience, "we turn the page. This land no longer belongs to men who hide behind hollow titles and borrowed wealth. It belongs to the twelve hundred men and women who build this city with their hands every single day. It belongs to the families who will live here, learn here, and grow here."

The crowd erupted into resounding applause. Union workers raised their hardhats into the air, shouting in support.

As the applause swelled, Elena picked up a polished silver shovel, stepped down from the stage, and drove it deep into the dark, rich earth at the center of the site. She turned the first soil herself, holding her head high beneath the bright morning sun.

She had arrived in this city years ago as a quiet bride, forced into silence by a cruel family that thought she was weak.

Today, she stood as the sole owner of a multi-billion-dollar empire, flanked by the five strongest men in the state, entirely unbroken.
