Chapter 14 - THE CONFESSION

Baldric had trusted Charles Whitmore for thirty-two years.

That trust had survived business collapses, lawsuits, family disputes, and even the death of Baldric's wife.

Charles had been there when Baldric had nothing.

He had helped organize the trusts.

Protected the family accounts.

Managed the private investments.

And after Baldric's wife died, Charles had been one of the few people who stayed.

Now, standing in the doorway of the locked study, Charles looked less like an old friend and more like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

Baldric didn't move.

“You knew.”

Charles lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer was so quiet that it almost sounded like an apology.

Baldric's voice became cold.

“How long?”

Charles looked at the photograph of Baldric's wife.

“Since before she died.”

Baldric's jaw tightened.

“Did you kill her?”

Charles didn't answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Baldric took one step forward.

“Did you kill my wife?”

“No.”

Baldric stopped.

Charles continued.

“I didn't kill her.”

“Then who did?”

“Elias.”

Baldric's eyes widened.

Charles slowly closed the study door behind him.

“But Elias didn't do it because he wanted her dead.”

Baldric stared at him.

“He did it because he believed he had no other choice.”

For the first time, Baldric realized there were still pieces of the story he didn't understand.

Charles explained that Elias had discovered the Vances were using Baldric's companies to move money through shell corporations.

He tried to expose them.

But the Vances threatened Arianne.

They threatened Gideon.

And then they threatened Baldric's wife.

Elias secretly contacted her.

Together, they planned to expose the Vances.

But someone betrayed them.

Someone gave the Vances access to their plans.

Someone inside Baldric's own organization.

Charles.

Baldric's expression hardened.

“You sold them out.”

Charles shook his head.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You protected them.”

“I made one mistake.”

“One mistake?”

Baldric's voice echoed through the room.

“My wife died.”

Charles's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“Your mistake destroyed my family.”

Charles looked toward the window.

“No. My mistake started something I couldn't stop.”

Baldric stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Charles reached inside his jacket and removed a folded document.

He placed it on the desk.

It was an old trust agreement.

Baldric recognized his wife's signature.

Charles pointed to one paragraph.

“She knew she was being watched.”

Baldric read it carefully.

Then his eyes widened.

The trust didn't belong to Arianne.

It didn't belong to Gideon.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone Baldric had never considered.

His wife had secretly placed control of a massive portion of the family fortune into a protected trust.

And the beneficiary was...

Baldric.

Not his children.

Not his grandchildren.

Him.

Because she had known something he didn't.

Baldric wasn't protecting his family from the Vances.

The family had been protecting Baldric from himself.

Charles whispered:

“Your wife discovered that the Vances weren't trying to steal your empire.”

“They were trying to force you to destroy it.”

Baldric looked up.

“Why?”

Charles hesitated.

“Because your empire wasn't built the way you think.”

Before Baldric could ask another question, the study window shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Charles dropped.

Baldric dove behind the desk.

A second shot struck the wall.

Then silence.

Baldric looked at Charles.

Charles was bleeding from his shoulder.

But he was alive.

And outside the mansion, a black SUV was already disappearing into the night.

May you like

Charles whispered:

“They're coming for Gideon.”
