Chapter 16 - THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS WIFE

The abandoned warehouse stood at the edge of an industrial district, surrounded by empty roads and broken streetlights.
Rain had begun falling heavily by the time Baldric arrived.
He stepped out of the vehicle alone.
The warehouse doors were open.
Inside, a single light hung from the ceiling.
Baldric walked forward.
Every step echoed through the enormous empty building.
Then he heard a child's voice.
“Grandpa?”
Baldric's heart broke.
“Gideon!”
He ran toward the sound.
But before he reached him, the lights suddenly turned on.
Gideon was sitting in a chair.
Unharmed.
Standing behind him was Elias.
Baldric stopped.
For a moment, the two brothers simply stared at each other.
Twenty-five years of grief.
Anger.
Questions.
And betrayal.
All standing in the same room.
Baldric whispered:
“You're alive.”
Elias nodded.
“I never died.”
“Why?”
Elias looked toward Gideon.
“Because your wife asked me to disappear.”
Baldric's face tightened.
“She knew?”
“She knew everything.”
Elias explained that his death had been staged after he discovered the Vances were planning to take control of Baldric's empire through the family trust.
But there was something Baldric never knew.
His wife had discovered that Charles had been compromised.
She couldn't trust the police.
She couldn't trust the board.
She couldn't trust the lawyers.
So she trusted Elias.
They staged his death and began building evidence in secret.
But before they could expose the Vances, Baldric's wife was killed.
Baldric's voice trembled.
“Then who killed her?”
Elias looked at him.
“The Vances ordered it.”
Baldric's eyes hardened.
“But they didn't carry it out.”
Silence.
Elias slowly looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Charles was standing there.
Baldric turned.
Charles looked exhausted.
Broken.
And ashamed.
“I didn't know they were going to kill her.”
Baldric stared at him.
“You gave them the information.”
“Yes.”
“You knew they were threatening her.”
“Yes.”
“And you still helped them.”
Charles lowered his head.
“I thought I could control them.”
Baldric walked toward him.
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
Charles reached into his coat and removed a final envelope.
“Your wife gave this to me the day before she died.”
Baldric took it.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His wife's handwriting.
Baldric,
If you're reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
You spent your entire life believing you built an empire to protect our family.
But your empire became so powerful that people stopped seeing us as a family and started seeing us as an opportunity.
I discovered that someone close to you was selling information to the Vances.
I discovered that Elias was alive.
And I discovered something even worse.
The Vances never wanted your company.
They wanted Gideon to inherit it.
Baldric's eyes filled with tears.
The letter continued.
Because once Gideon became the legal heir, they believed they could control him.
But they made one mistake.
I created a second trust.
A trust that cannot be controlled by the Vances.
It can only be activated by Gideon when he turns twenty-one.
Baldric looked at Gideon.
The little boy stared back at him.
Then Baldric read the final line.
And the guardian of that trust is not you.
His breathing stopped.
Below the sentence was another name.
Baldric stared at it.
He looked up at Elias.
Then at Charles.
Then at his grandson.
And finally understood why his wife had kept this secret from everyone.
The guardian wasn't a businessman.
Wasn't a lawyer.
Wasn't a banker.

It was the one person the Vances had never considered dangerous.
Arianne.
