Chapter 11 - THE TRAP CLOSES

"You stole my biometric data!" Julian screamed through the phone. In the background, I could hear Fiona wailing loudly. "That’s illegal! That’s an invasion of privacy! I’m calling the police on you!"

"Go right ahead, Julian," Darcy spoke up, her authoritative voice cutting through the speaker like a blade. "This is Darcy Sterling, Sloan’s lead counsel. Please tell the police that your wife accessed a safe located inside her primary residence to retrieve documents detailing corporate tax fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny committed using her business identity."

The line went dead silent. Julian’s ragged breathing was the only sound echoing over the speaker.

"Darcy...?" Julian stammed, his arrogance suddenly faltering.

"Mr. Miller," Darcy continued calmly, "every word of this call is being recorded for the Cook County District Attorney's office. As of two hours ago, a federal financial freeze was placed on all assets associated with Vance & Miller Holdings. If you step within five hundred feet of your wife, or if you attempt to contact her again, the Sheriff's department will execute an immediate arrest warrant for violation of a protective order."

"You... you can't leave us with nothing!" Julian’s voice cracked, dropping into a pathetic, desperate whine. "My mother is sick! We don't even have enough money to pay for a hotel room tonight!"

"I suggest you ask Fiona to sell her pearls, Julian," I said softly into the microphone. "After all... she deserves the very best for her sixtieth birthday."

Before he could answer, I ended the call.

Marcus looked up from his laptop, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his face. "The grand jury is going to love these audio files."
