Chapter 8 - THE BLACK LEDGERS

The silence of the master closet was broken only by the soft, steady rustle of turning paper.
Inside the thick manila envelope sealed with red wax were five years of meticulous financial records. Julian had spent years convincing me he was an unlucky entrepreneur whose business ideas just couldn't catch a break. The ledgers inside the safe told a vastly different story.
He wasn't an unlucky businessman. He was a shell company architect.
Using the $3,500 monthly mortgage payments I made on the penthouse, along with secondary lines of credit he had secretly opened in my name, Julian had been systematically transferring capital into three offshore holding entities based in the Cayman Islands. But the real surprise lay in the second binder—a collection of private banking statements belonging to Fiona.
Fiona didn't just know about Julian’s financial games; she was the primary beneficiary. Her luxury shopping sprees, her annual trips to Europe, her pearl necklaces, and her high-stakes casino trips to Lake Michigan were all funded directly by tax-evaded transfers laundered through my architectural firm’s business credit profile.
My phone buzzed on the shelf beside me. Darcy’s name flashed across the screen.
"Sloan," Darcy said the second I picked up. "The Sheriff’s deputies just confirmed Julian and Fiona left the parking garage. Are you okay?"
"I'm better than okay, Darcy," I said, eyeing the stacks of leather-bound ledgers. "I just opened the master closet safe."
Darcy paused. "The biometric one? How?"
"A silicone cast and a very drunk husband three weeks ago," I replied. "You need to come back over here. Right now. And bring a forensic accountant."
Darcy let out a long, low whistle. "What did you find?"

"Proof that Julian didn't just commit domestic abuse," I said, picking up a stamped wire transfer document showing a $250,000 movement of funds dated two weeks prior. "He committed federal tax fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny. And he left every single receipt right here."
"Don't touch anything else without gloves," Darcy’s voice turned razor-sharp. "I’m calling Marcus Vance. He’s the top forensic auditor in the district. We’re going to freeze those offshore accounts before Julian even realizes his thumbprint wasn't as secure as he thought."
