Chapter 13 - RECKONING AT THE RIVER

The abandoned steel warehouse on the bank of the Calumet River was cold, dark, and smelled of rust and river water.
I was tied to a wooden chair near the center of the floor, my face bruised where Evelyn had struck me. Evelyn stood ten feet away, pacing back and forth while her three hired mercenaries stood watch near the rusted iron doors.
"He's not going to wire the money, Evelyn," I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the shivering cold. "You know how Luca operates. He doesn't negotiate."
"He will negotiate for you!" Evelyn shouted, spinning around. "He burned down my entire family for you! He will pay fifty million dollars to get you back, and then I am leaving this godforsaken country!"
Before I could answer, the massive iron doors of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening EXPLOSION.
Concussion grenades detonated, filling the dark building with blinding light and disorienting sound. Shockwaves rattled the steel rafters.
"DOWN! GET DOWN!" heavy tactical boots stomped against the concrete floor.
Evelyn screamed, dropping her phone as smoke billowed through the room. Her three hired guards drew their weapons, but before they could fire, flash-suppressed gunfire echoed through the haze. All three men dropped to the floor, disarmed and neutralized within seconds.
Through the swirling white smoke stepped a single figure.
Not a police officer. Not a tactical mercenary.
Luca.
He walked through the fog like a phantom rising from hell. He wasn't wearing body armor. He held no weapon. He walked with heavy, deliberate steps, his eyes fixed entirely on me.
When he saw the blood on my lip and the ropes binding my wrists, something in his posture broke into pure, unadulterated savagery.
"Luca!" Evelyn shrieked, backing away toward the water's edge, pulling a small handgun from her coat with shaking hands. "Stay back! Stay back or I'll shoot her!"
Luca didn't even look at the gun pointed at him. He didn't slow down.
"Evelyn," Luca said, his voice so quiet it cut through the ringing echoes of the explosion. "You have five seconds to drop that weapon before I hand you over to the men behind me."
"You ruined my life!" she sobbed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "We were supposed to be the power couple of Chicago! You were supposed to be mine!"
"I was never yours," Luca said, stepping directly between the barrel of her gun and my chair. "I belonged to her seven years ago. I belong to her now. And if you touch her again, God Himself won't be able to save you from me."
Marco stepped up from the shadows behind Evelyn, swiftly disarming her from behind and forcing her to her knees in one seamless movement.
The gun clattered harmlessly against the concrete floor.
Luca didn't even watch Evelyn get cuffed. He dropped to his knees in front of my chair, his hands shaking violently as he pulled a knife from his pocket and sliced through the ropes binding my wrists.
"Nia," his voice cracked, all the terrifying coldness vanishing, replaced by a desperate, sobbing gasp. He pulled me into his arms, burying his face in the crook of my neck, holding me so tightly I could feel his entire body trembling. "Nia... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I let them hurt you again..."
I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, clinging to him in the cold, smoky dark.
"I'm okay, Luca," I whispered into his ear, feeling his tears wet against my collar. "I'm okay. You came for me."
May you like
"I will always come for you," he vowed against my skin, kissing my hair, my cheek, my lips with a desperate, fierce devotion. "Always."
Outside, the distant wail of police sirens signaled the final end of the Shaw dynasty. But inside the dark warehouse, held tightly in the arms of the man who had burned his world to save mine, I knew that the storm was finally over—and our real journey was just beginning.
