Chapter 18 - THE IMPENETRABLE FORTRESS

That evening, the sky turned into a gorgeous canvas of purple, gold, and pink as the sun set over Lake Michigan.

We gathered on the back patio for dinner—a lively, noisy affair with Leo debating about his middle school sports tryouts, Maya showing off her newest watercolor paintings, and Luca sitting at the head of the table, listening to every word with a quiet, glowing pride.

After dinner, the kids ran off to play board games in the living room.

Luca and I walked down to the edge of the property, standing by the wooden fence that overlooked the quiet lake. The water reflected the fading light of the twilight sky.

Luca stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder, his large hand resting softly over my abdomen where our new life was growing.

"Seven years ago, I thought my life was over when I walked away from you," I murmured softly, looking out at the water. "I thought I would spend the rest of my days hiding in the dark, guarding a secret."

"And seven years ago, I was a blind man living in a cage of my own making," Luca whispered into my hair. "I thought success was measured in dollars and skyscrapers. I didn't realize that my true wealth was standing right in front of me, waiting for me to be brave enough to see it."

He turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes filled with an eternal, unwavering devotion. He cupped my face with his large hands, his fingers gentle against my skin.

"No more secrets," Luca promised softly. "No more lies. No more shadows."

"Only us," I replied, leaning up on my toes.

Luca kissed me—a slow, deep, everlasting kiss that carried the weight of our past, the joy of our present, and the infinite promise of our future.

Around us, the night settled peacefully over our home. The cold, ruthless billionaire and the broken ex-wife were gone, replaced by two souls who had fought through hell to find their way back to heaven.
