Chapter 15 - THE VELVET BOX

Midnight struck. Friday had arrived. My twenty-ninth birthday.
I sat alone in the quiet brownstone, the silence heavy and absolute. On the desk lay the black velvet box Julian had left behind.
My hands trembled slightly as I reached out and flipped open the silver clasp.
Inside rested a simple, unpolished key made of solid platinum, accompanied by a small folded piece of parchment written in my mother’s distinctive, elegant handwriting.
I unfolded the note.
Dearest Emma,
If you are reading this, the glass has finally shattered. I spent my life building an empire of stone and diamonds to protect you from the wolves in our own family—from Katherine’s greed, from Victor’s madness, and from the weakness of men who seek to claim what they did not build.
The key in this box opens Vault 409 at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Maiden Lane. Inside, you will not find diamonds or stock certificates. You will find the original 1995 Master Founders Agreement—signed by Katherine, Arthur, and myself.
Katherine believes she owns Aegis Capital. She believes she cornered you with forty million dollars of debt. What she does not know—what no one knows—is that Aegis Capital was originally incorporated as a subsidiary of the Vance Family Trust.
Every dollar Katherine used to build Aegis came from my private reserves. She does not own your debt, Emma.
You own her.
Go to the vault. Take back your crown.
Love always,
Mother
I stared at the platinum key, a cold, fierce smile slowly spreading across my face.
The grief, the betrayal, and the fear that had weighed on me for the past week evaporated into the cold night air. Nathan was in a jail cell. Celeste was gone. Julian thought he held the master key. And Katherine thought she was coming to execute a foreclosure.

They had spent years playing chess against each other.
They didn't realize that my mother had already won the game thirty years ago.
