Chapter 6 - THE ENIGMA OF ZURICH

The air inside the dimly lit foyer grew cold as Julian’s words settled into the space between us.

"The man who killed him?" I repeated, my knuckles white against the brass handle of the letter opener. "What are you talking about, Julian? My father died in a plane crash off the Maine coast."

"That was the official story your mother gave the press," Julian said, his dark coat rustling as he took another deliberate step into the light of the hallway lamp. "In 2001, Eleanor’s elder stepbrother—Victor Vance—tried to seize controlling interest of the family trust. When Arthur refused to hand over the board votes, Victor sabotaged the private aircraft. Arthur died in the wreckage. Victor survived, but with severe neurological damage."

I stared at him, my mind racing through two decades of buried memories. I remembered a shadowy uncle who had vanished from family photographs when I was four, a name whispered in tense arguments behind closed doors.

"My mother didn't report him to the police?" I asked, incredulous.

"If she had reported Victor, the public scandal would have liquidated Vance & Co. overnight," Julian replied flatly. "Instead, Eleanor used Victor’s brain injury to commit him to a private clinic under Arthur's name, effectively burying Victor alive while seizing his remaining shares. She kept him sedated for twenty-five years."

"And Celeste found out," I murmured, connecting the dots.

"Celeste didn't just find out—she spent the last eight years using that secret to blackmail your husband," Julian said, a cold smile touching his lips. "Nathan doesn't want the company just to cover his gambling debts, Emma. He’s trying to pay off Victor’s illegal guardians before Victor regains legal sanity and files a claim to invalidate your mother’s entire estate."

I lowered the letter opener, the weight of the revelation crashing over me. The betrayal went far beyond a cheating husband and a forged signature; it was a decades-old web of corporate murder, hidden identity, and institutional corruption.

"Why are you telling me this, Julian?" I asked, looking directly into his gray eyes. "Nathan is your brother."

"Nathan is a fool who is about to drag the Sterling name into federal prison," Julian answered smoothly. "You hold fifty-one percent of the real empire, Emma. I’m not here to save Nathan. I’m here to make sure you don't burn down the house while you're hunting him."
