Chapter 18 - THE RECORDING THAT ENDED THEM

Logan was taken away in handcuffs.
But Victor was still free.
And my father was missing.
The police searched the estate for hours.
They found financial records.
Forged signatures.
Offshore accounts.
Payments to Carter Bell.
Hospital records.
And dozens of encrypted files.
But none of it was enough to connect Victor directly.
Until Rachel handed Daniel a phone.
“I have something else.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“A recording.”
She pressed PLAY.
Victor's voice filled the room.
Clear.
Cold.
Unmistakable.
“Logan, the girl cannot know who her mother is.”
Logan answered:
“What about Maya?”
“She is already handled.”
“She's getting suspicious.”
“Then make sure she doesn't survive the wedding.”
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
Logan asked:
“And Ethan?”
Victor replied:
“Keep him dependent on you.”
“His inheritance transfers when he turns eighteen.”
A pause.
Then Victor said something that changed everything.
“If Maya ever discovers the truth, kill her before she reaches Ethan.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Daniel looked at the officers.
“That is enough.”
But I wasn't thinking about Victor.
I was thinking about my father.
“Where is he?”
Ryan checked his phone.
Then his face changed.
“Maya.”
“What?”
“We found the location of Victor's private helicopter.”
“Where?”
“Chicago.”
My heart sank.
Lily was standing beside me.
She reached for my hand.
“Are we going to find Grandpa?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“I'm coming.”
I looked at him.
“You're seventeen.”
“So?”
“You could get hurt.”
He shook his head.
“He spent my entire life making decisions for me.”
His eyes hardened.
“I'm done letting other people decide what happens to my family.”
My family.
The words hit me harder than anything else.
For fifteen years, I had believed I had no family left.
Now I had a son.
A daughter.
A mother.
A father who was still fighting somewhere.
And people willing to stand beside me.
We flew to Chicago before sunrise.
Victor's private property was surrounded by armed security.
But Daniel had one advantage.
The recording.
We had a warrant.
The gates opened.
Inside, we found Victor in the basement.
And beside him—
my father.
He was bleeding from his forehead.
But alive.
Victor held a gun against his chest.
“Maya.”
I stepped forward.
“Let him go.”
Victor smiled.
“You came exactly as I expected.”
My father looked at me.
“Don't negotiate.”
Victor laughed.
“Your father still thinks he's in control.”
Then he looked at Ethan.
“My boy.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You're not my family.”
Victor's expression darkened.
“You have my blood.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“I have my mother's.”
Victor raised the gun.
“Enough.”
Then Lily stepped beside me.
“Let Grandpa go.”
Victor looked at her.
For the first time, his expression showed genuine fear.
He recognized her.
Not as a child.
But as the final piece of the inheritance.
“You.”
He whispered.
“The daughter.”
I realized something.
Victor had spent fifteen years believing Ethan was the only heir.
He didn't know about Lily.
And that meant we had something he desperately needed.
The Sterling bloodline had never been one heir.
It had been two.
Daniel quietly lifted his phone.
The recording was still running.
Victor didn't notice.
He pointed the gun at my father.
“Give me the certificate.”
My father smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
He looked at me.
“Maya never needed the certificate.”
Victor frowned.
“She already activated it.”
Victor's face went blank.
“Impossible.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“The moment Maya became legal guardian of both children, the trust transferred.”
Victor slowly realized what had happened.
“You lost.”
Then the basement doors exploded open.
Police flooded in.
Victor raised his gun.
But before he could fire—
my father tackled him.
The weapon hit the floor.
Officers pinned Victor down.
