Chapter 19 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Six months later, the courtroom was packed.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Bank transfers.

Forged documents.

Hospital records.

Carter Bell's testimony.

Rachel's testimony.

Ryan's testimony.

And most importantly—

Victor's own voice.

Victor Vance was convicted on multiple charges.

Logan pleaded guilty after the evidence against him became impossible to escape.

Rachel received immunity for cooperating.

Ryan disappeared from the public eye after testifying.

And my father—

finally came home.

He spent weeks recovering.

My mother never left his side.

They had lost fifteen years together.

But they refused to lose another day.

As for me…

I had to learn how to live again.

The scars on my face remained.

Some were visible.

Some weren't.

But I stopped hiding them.

One morning, I stood in front of the mirror.

Lily walked into the room.

She looked at my reflection.

“Does it still hurt?”

“Sometimes.”

She smiled.

“You still look pretty.”

I laughed.

“I don't think pretty is the word I'd use.”

She hugged me.

“You're my mom.”

And somehow, that was enough.

Ethan walked in carrying two coffees.

He handed one to me.

“Mom.”

I smiled.

“Thanks.”

He looked at himself in the mirror.

“Do you think I look like Grandpa?”

I looked at him.

“Unfortunately.”

He laughed.

For the first time, our family felt almost normal.

Then my father entered.

He carried a small wooden box.

“Maya.”

I looked at him.

“What is that?”

“Something I've been waiting fifteen years to give you.”

He opened it.

Inside was the original engagement ring Logan had given me.

I stared at it.

For a moment, memories returned.

The proposal.

The champagne.

The flowers.

The wedding invitations.

The life I thought I was going to have.

Then I took the ring.

And walked outside.

My father followed.

“What are you going to do?”

I looked toward the garden.

There was a stone fountain.

I threw the ring into it.

It disappeared beneath the water.

“I don't want his future.”

I turned toward my father.

“I want mine.”

That evening, my family gathered around the dinner table.

Lily was laughing.

Ethan was arguing with my mother about dessert.

My father was pretending not to listen.

I looked around.

For years, I had thought revenge meant destroying Logan.

It didn't.

Revenge was waking up every morning without being afraid of him.

Revenge was raising my children.

Revenge was rebuilding the life he tried to erase.

Then the doorbell rang.

Daniel stood outside.

He carried an envelope.

“Maya.”

I frowned.

“What is it?”

He handed it to me.

“Something arrived from the court.”

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The Sterling Trust had been fully transferred.

To me.

And to my children.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Not from the court.

Not from Daniel.

From my father.

You survived what they wanted to destroy.

Now build something they can never take from you.

I looked at my family.

And smiled.

But there was one final page inside the envelope.

A document I had never seen before.

At the top was a name.

EVELYN STERLING.

My aunt.

The woman who had disappeared twenty years ago.

And beneath her name was a date.

Tomorrow.

My smile disappeared.

May you like

Because according to the document—

Evelyn was coming home.
