Chapter 20 - THE VOW UNBROKEN (THE END)

Everett’s breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, the formidable, feared king of Chicago looked completely disarmed.
Then, a slow, radiant smile broke across his face—the first genuine smile he had worn in years.
He stood up from his chair, walked around the mahogany desk, and pulled the annulment papers off the surface, deliberately tearing them cleanly down the middle before dropping the pieces into the wastebasket.
“Good,” Everett murmured, reaching out to gently take her hands in his. “Because I was terrible at negotiating business deals anyway, and I certainly have no intention of letting the best thing that ever happened to this estate walk out the front door.”
He pulled her up into his arms, holding her close as the warm afternoon breeze drifted through the open French doors of the study, carrying the sweet scent of blooming spring jasmine from the garden below.
Downstairs, the grand grandfather clock chimed peacefully, its steady, rhythmic chime echoing through a house that was finally, truly alive again.
