Chapter 9 - MIDNIGHT DESCENT

The grandfather clock in the second-floor hallway struck twelve times, its deep, resonant gongs echoing through the cavernous stillness of the Kane estate.

Willa slipped out of the master suite, wearing dark jeans and a black turtleneck that blended seamlessly into the shadows. Her rubber-soled sneakers made zero sound against the polished oak floorboards.

The descent into the basement wine cellar felt like walking into a tomb.

The air grew damp and chilled, smelling of ancient dust, rich oak barrels, and bottled vintage wine. Willa flicked on a small pocket flashlight she had stolen from the utility room, casting a narrow beam of white light across towering wooden racks filled with thousands of sleeping bottles.

She navigated her way through the maze of racks until she reached the far corner, where the temperature was carefully regulated for the rarest vintages.

1994 Château Margaux.

With both hands, Willa gripped the heavy wooden shelving unit. It was mounted on a hidden hydraulic pivot. Grunting softly under the weight, she pulled sideways. With a low, metallic groan, the entire rack swung outward on oiled hinges, revealing a heavy steel wall safe set directly into the concrete foundation.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she stepped into the narrow alcove.

She punched in the numbers Mrs. Gable had given her: 0-4-1-2-6-8.

Click.

The heavy steel handle dropped downward. Willa pulled open the vault door.

Inside sat a stack of thick, leather-bound corporate ledgers, a heavy encrypted flash drive labeled KANE FREIGHT - MASTER BACKUP, and a sealed manila envelope addressed in bold, sharp handwriting: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN / CONTINGENCY PROTOCOL OMEGA.

She reached inside, pulled out the envelope and the flash drive, and tucked them securely into the inner pocket of her jacket.

Suddenly, a sharp sound cut through the quiet cellar.

Creak.

It was the heavy oak door at the top of the basement stairs opening. Followed by the unmistakable click of hard-soled shoes stepping onto the wooden landing.

“Who’s down there?” a gruff voice called out—Mr. Crowley, the estate manager.

Panic spiked in Willa’s chest, cold and sharp. The cellar had only one exit, and Crowley was standing right in front of it.
