Chapter 19 - THE BREAD AND THE BOND

That evening, the grand city was quiet, but for the first time in eight years, it was truly peaceful.
Clara and I walked together down the quiet street of Sector 4 where we had first met. The broken concrete wall was still there, but the freezing slush was gone, replaced by soft, falling snow that sparkled under the warm streetlights.
A newly opened community kitchen stood where the abandoned shop used to be, its windows glowing with amber light, sending the warm, rich scent of freshly baked bread drifting into the winter air.
We stopped at the exact spot on the sidewalk where I had once huddled in rags, shivering and waiting to die.
Clara pulled a warm, freshly baked loaf of sourdough bread from her coat pocket. She looked at me, her brown eyes sparkling with gentle laughter, and broke it right down the middle.
"Please, this is for you," Clara said, her voice mocking her own formal tone from that fateful day, holding out the larger half.
I took the warm bread, tears of deep, overwhelming happiness welling in my eyes. I didn't choke on my tears this time. I took a bite, savoring the warmth, then wrapped my arm around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her into a tight, warm hug right there on the sidewalk.
"Thank you, Clara," I whispered softly into the crisp winter air. "For the bread... and for finding me."
"We found each other, Nora," Clara smiled, hugging me back tightly.

Overhead, the silver moon shone brightly against the night sky, casting a soft glow over two girls who had faced a cold, brutal world with nothing but half a loaf of bread and an unbreakable bond—and changed it forever.
