Chapter 8 - THE SUBTERRANEAN PATH

The air inside the tunnel was freezing, smelling faintly of old damp stone and copper rust. Above us, the heavy vibrations of automatic gunfire and muffled explosions rattled the ancient masonry, sending fine gray dust showering down onto our hair.

"Move! Keep moving!" Captain Hayes barked, his tactical flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the pitch blackness. He held his sidearm angled toward the ground, his eyes darting back and forth across the damp walls.

Clara was sobbing quietly beside me, her body trembling so violently I could feel it through the leather of her sturdy boots. She clung to my left hand with a knuckles-white grip, her cozy camel coat—now smudged with soot and dirt—draped awkwardly over her shoulders.

"Where are we going?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady despite the horror pounding in my chest. Eight years on the streets of Sector 4 had taught me one thing: panic got you killed. Fear was a luxury for people with full stomachs and locked doors.

"Underneath the perimeter wall," Captain Hayes replied without turning back. "There’s an emergency escape shuttle in the old drainage sub-level. If Protocol Zero is initiated, the entire manor above will detonate its tactical thermal charges to sanitize the site."

Clara gasped, pulling to a sudden stop on the slimy stone stairs. "Detonate?! But Uncle Victor is up there!"

"Mr. Vance knew the risks, Miss Clara," Hayes said grimly, reaching back to pull her forward. "The Syndicate isn't here to ransom you. They're here to erase Miss Nora before her bloodline claim reaches the High Council."

Just as we reached the bottom of the winding stairs, a heavy, metallic CLANG echoed from the top of the passage behind us.

The stone door beneath the fireplace was being cut through. Bright blue sparks spat through the darkness as a thermal torch began eating through the reinforced steel frame.

"They're in the shaft!" Hayes hissed. He reached into his vest, pulled out a thick security keycard, and slapped it against an iron portal at the end of the corridor. "Get inside! Now!"
