Chapter 11 - THE FIRST SERVICE

The grand opening night of Shiomara’s Kitchen hummed with a vibrant, electric energy. The air carried the rich, comforting aromas of slow-simmered spices, garlic, and fresh herbs—scents that had once risen from a rusted metal pot on a windy street corner, now elevated to absolute culinary art.

Shiomara stood behind the stainless-steel pass-through window, her hands steady as she plated the final orders for the evening rush.

For decades, her kitchen had been limited to a single propane burner and a wooden counter that shook every time a heavy truck rumbled past. Now, she commanded a state-of-the-art brigade of professional chefs who looked at her not just as an executive chef, but with a fierce, unwavering devotion.

“Order up, Chef,” her sous-chef called out respectfully, sliding a ticket across the rail.

Shiomara glanced at the table number: Table 1. The private corner booth reserved for the Vances.

She paused for a brief second, wiped her hands on her clean white apron, and walked out of the kitchen doors herself, carrying a silver tray bearing three steaming bowls of her signature spiced rice and stewed beans—the exact meal she had shared beneath the bridge forty-two years ago.

When she approached Table 1, Eleanor, Julian, and Marcus all looked up simultaneously.

“I thought I’d serve the VIPs personally,” Shiomara said with a warm, teasing smile, setting the bowls down gently in front of them.

Julian looked down at the simple, rustic presentation, his eyes shining with profound emotion. “You know, Shiomara... no matter how fancy the plate is, it still smells just like home.”
