Chapter 15 - THE RESIDUAL CODE

I stared at the photograph of the boy, the cold, unblinking eyes staring back at me from the glossy paper.

"Where is Harrison now?" I asked, my tone dropping to a grim stillness.

"In debriefing," Sterling replied smoothly. "His assets have been seized, his accounts scrubbed. He will live out the rest of his natural life under quiet federal supervision. The debt has been balanced."

"And the boy?" I pushed. "What happens to Unit Seven when the ledgers balance? Does he just go back in a box until the next thief makes a mistake?"

Sterling paused, sliding the folder back into his briefcase and snapping the latches shut with a crisp click. He looked at me, for a brief fraction of a second, with something resembling genuine exhaustion.

"That," Sterling said softly, "is classified."

He motioned toward the door. The automated lock clicked open.

"Thank you for your cooperation today, Detective Miller. Your report will state that you subdued an amateur armed robber and restored order to a standard civilian branch. Anything else... and you'll find yourself reassigned to a desk job in the Arctic Circle."

I stepped out of the SUV onto the concrete pavement, the doors closing behind me with a heavy, final thud. The vehicle pulled away into traffic, disappearing into the city skyline without a trace.

I stood there in the cool afternoon air, my hand brushing against the silver badge on my belt. I knew the official story was a lie. I knew the ghost of Westbridge was still very much alive beneath our feet.

And somewhere in the dark corridors of that underground world, a ten-year-old boy was sitting in front of a glowing screen, watching the numbers tick by—waiting for the next imbalance in the world to correct.
