Chapter 16 - THE GHOST IN THE ARCHIVE

Three days had passed since the lockdown at the community bank. To the public and the local precinct, the file was closed: an amateur robber apprehended, a manager quietly retiring due to health issues, and Detective Miller receiving a commendation for calm under fire.
Yet, my badge felt heavy in my pocket, and the image of Unit Seven—the ten-year-old boy whose eyes held no childhood—refused to leave my mind.
Sitting alone at my desk in the dim corner of the precinct past midnight, I bypassed the standard police database and opened an encrypted, back-channel terminal I had inherited from an old mentor in federal cyber-crimes. I began tracing the digital footprint left behind by the Westbridge override signal.
Most lines were scrubbed clean, routed through ghost servers in Zurich and Langley. But buried deep within a corrupted packet header, I found a single unredacted string of metadata: a geographic ping originating from an abandoned water treatment facility on the outskirts of the industrial zone.
