Chapter 2 - THE UNFLINCHING BOY

"Hey!"

The robber’s head snapped toward the center of the room. He froze, his rubber boots scraping harshly against the tile as he abandoned the bank teller and stormed straight toward the child, leveling the rusted, double-barreled muzzle of the shotgun directly at the boy's chest.

"I said get down, you little brat!" the gunman screamed, spittle flying wildly through the jagged eyeholes of his dirty ski mask.

Every single survival instinct wired into my nervous system screamed at me to leap up, to throw myself between the lethal arc of that barrel and the child. But my training held me back—a sudden, uncalculated move would startle an already panicked amateur, and the hair-trigger would snap. I braced my weight onto my palms, muscles coiled tight like a compressed spring, waiting for the split-second window to detonate my movement.

The boy did not flinch. Not a single muscle in his pale face twitched.

Slowly, deliberately, he drew his right hand from his pocket. Clutched firmly in his small palm was a heavy, matte-black rectangular device, its surface cold and featureless except for a single glowing blue indicator light.

"You should leave now," the boy said.

His voice was astonishingly calm, flat, and devoid of any childish pitch, carrying with unnatural clarity across the terrified, suffocating silence of the bank. Something about that exact tone—clinical, emotionless, rigidly precise—sent a sharp, freezing chill straight down my spine.

I knew that tone. I had heard it once before in a classified federal briefing at the academy. It matched the automated emergency warning broadcast by Westbridge Security systems moments before an absolute federal lockdown. But that proprietary military-grade technology was restricted exclusively to high-security reserve vaults and black-site government installations—not a quiet, suburban civilian branch office.
