Chapter 4 - THE INTRUDER DOWN

That was my moment. The deafening echo of the gunshot drowned out the sound of my movement entirely.
I launched myself forward from the tiles, covering the thirty feet in a furious, blur-like sprint. I slammed hard into his back, using my momentum to drive him forward against the unyielding steel gate.
The sawed-off shotgun clattered loudly from his grip, sliding away across the slick floor.
Before he could regain his balance or reach for a secondary weapon, I hooked my arm tightly around his elbow, twisted his arm sharply behind his back, and swept his legs out from under him. I pinned him face-first to the floor with my knee planted squarely between his shoulder blades, slapping my tactical cuffs onto his wrists with practiced speed.
"Police! Don’t move!" I barked, adrenaline finally flooding my veins, hot and heavy.
The amateur robber collapsed instantly into a heap, sobbing uncontrollably, completely limp with shock and the devastating realization that his grand heist had turned into an inescapable concrete trap.
I hauled him roughly to his feet, shoving him toward the trembling security guard cowering near the bulletproof counter. "Secure him. Keep him facedown on the tiles."
Then, I turned back around.
The boy had not moved an inch from the center of the room. He stood bathed entirely in the pulsing red emergency light, watching the violent commotion with the detached, analytical curiosity of a senior scientist observing a laboratory experiment.
I approached him slowly, holding my hands out palms-open, trying desperately to project safety and reassurance. "Son… are you all right? That was… incredibly brave, but you could have been killed out there."
The boy slowly looked up.

Up close, the crimson emergency light caught his features, and my breath caught sharply in my throat. His eyes were cold, ancient, and utterly devoid of childhood innocence—far too old, too calculating, for his small face.
"He wasn't going to shoot me," the boy said quietly, his voice devoid of tremor. "He doesn't have the security clearance."
