Chapter 13 - STARS OVER THE HUDSON

Six months later. Autumn had arrived.
The terrace of North Star Manor overlooked a valley ablaze with golden, amber, and crimson leaves. The crisp autumn air carried the scent of woodsmoke and pine.
In the nursery, little Liam was sound asleep, his soft breathing echoing through the baby monitor.
Elena stood by the stone railing of the terrace, wrapped in a soft cream cashmere shawl, holding a warm cup of cider. Steps echoed softly behind her—steady, strong, and familiar.
Alexander stepped up behind her, wrapping his long arms gently around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin softly on her shoulder, breathing in her warmth.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly, his deep voice vibrating against her back.
"I was thinking about a call I received a year ago," Elena murmured, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "Julian called me from the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral because he wanted me to hear the wedding bells. He wanted to break me."
Alexander turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down at her face—rosy from the cool breeze, her eyes bright, whole, and beautiful.
"He was a fool, Elena," Alexander said, his thumb tenderly tracing her lower lip. "He had a queen, and he traded her for dirt. But his stupidity was my salvation."
Elena looked up into the storm-gray eyes that had once terrified the corporate world, now filled with an overwhelming, unconditional devotion meant only for her.
"Do you know what the best part is, Alexander?" she whispered, reaching up to rest her palms against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.
"Tell me."
"The bells didn't break me," she smiled, a radiant, breathtaking smile that lit up her entire face. "They brought me to you."
Alexander’s breath hitched. He leaned down, his lips softly finding hers in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet autumn and promised forever. The sunset bathed the mountain estate in a warm, golden glow, casting their intertwined shadows long across the stone terrace.
