Chapter 9 - THE CORNERED BEAST

The news hit the room like a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure.
Julian Sterling was free, backed by foreign capital, and he had nothing left to lose. A man stripped of his title, his fortune, and his pride was far more dangerous than a man possessing everything.
"He won't go after the board," Elena said, her maternal instincts flaring into high gear as she walked over to gather Liam into her arms. "He knows the board is locked down. He’s coming for us."
"Let him come," Alexander said, his tone dropping an octave into a lethal calm. He reached into his jacket, pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, and speed-dialed a single number. "Execute Protocol Omega. Lock down the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves the valley."
Within minutes, the manor transformed from a luxury estate into a military-grade fortress. Steel security shutters rolled down over the panoramic glass windows, high-definition thermal cameras swept the forest perimeter, and armed security personnel in tactical gear took positions along the grounds.
Alexander walked over to Elena, placing a reassuring hand lightly on her shoulder. The heat of his palm seeped through her silk blouse, sending a subtle, electric shiver down her spine.
"You and Liam are safe here, Elena," he murmured, looking down at her eyes. "I built this place specifically for a siege."
"Why did you build a fortress, Alexander?" she asked, looking up at his sharp jawline.
"Because I knew a day would come when the monsters of my past would try to take the only thing that matters to me," he answered truthfully. "I just didn't know that 'thing' would be a woman and her child."
Their eyes met, holding a quiet, intense dialogue that transcended words. In the middle of the impending storm, a silent flame was igniting between two broken souls—one who had learned to stop loving, and one who had never been allowed to love at all.
Suddenly, the manor's central alarm chimed—a low, rhythmic pulse. The main security monitor flamed to life, displaying the front wrought-iron gates of the estate.

A single matte-black armored vehicle had rammed through the outer security barrier.
Stepping out into the falling snow was Julian Sterling, holding a military assault rifle, his face twisted into a grotesque mask of murderous madness.
