Chapter 8 - THE FORTRESS OF ICE AND FIRE

The morning sun cast golden ribbons across the hardwood floors of North Star Manor, but inside the room, time seemed to stand still.
Elena stared down at Alexander. The man who had been feared as the "Crippled Devil" of Wall Street was kneeling before her, his gray eyes devoid of the cold calculation that usually guarded them. In their depths, she saw an aching vulnerability—a raw, terrifying honesty that disarmed her far more than any weapon could.
"Get up, Alexander," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Alexander didn't hesitate. He stood with effortless grace, his towering frame casting a protective shadow over her and Liam's crib. Yet, he deliberately kept a respectful distance, sensing her overwhelming confusion.
"I don't expect you to trust me overnight, Elena," he said quietly, his voice like silk over iron. "You have been betrayed by a man who promised you forever. I would be a fool to expect you to open your heart to another man carrying a shadow."
Elena looked from him to the forensic document in her sister’s hands. "You knew... You knew you weren't a Sterling all along?"
"I found out three years ago," Alexander confessed, turning to look out at the Hudson River. "When I recovered from the crash, I realized my 'father' Raymond had orchestrated the collision to wipe out my adoptive mother and cripple me, ensuring Julian would have no rivals. I spent three years playing the helpless invalid, building my own private financial network in the dark, waiting for the right moment to burn their legacy to the ground."
He turned back to face her, his gaze locking onto hers. "And then, you walked into my field of vision. I saw how Julian treated you—like a trophy to be displayed when convenient, and a nuisance when you asked for basic affection. I wanted to tear him apart then. But you were married to him. I forced myself to wait."
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. All those years when she felt so utterly alone in the cold Sterling mansion, someone had been watching her from the shadows—not as a predator, but as a silent guardian.

Before she could process the weight of his confession, Victoria’s phone buzzed violently. She checked the encrypted screen, her face draining of color.
"Elena... Alexander," Victoria swallowed hard. "Julian just posted bail. An anonymous offshore syndicate posted his twenty-million-dollar bond. He's out."
