Later that afternoon, while the investigators cataloged the contents of the underground security room, I walked back into Julian’s ransacked study. The heavy mahogany desk was cluttered with forensic evidence bags and search warrants.
Resting near the edge of the blotter, left behind by the evidence team who deemed it personal property rather than corporate paperwork, was a small velvet pouch.
Curiosity pulling at my chest, I picked up the pouch and tipped it over.
Out fell the heavy diamond ring—Evolyn’s custom platinum ring, the silent witness to a crime that had remained buried for three years.
