Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Shadows

I knelt on the floor, my penlight trembling as I shone it down into the hidden compartment. Inside sat a single, leather-bound ledger and a heavy black laptop that was completely powered down.

Reaching into the recess, I lifted the ledger and opened it to the first page. The pages weren't filled with business acquisitions or real estate portfolios, as Julian always claimed his private work entailed. They were filled with dense columns of names, dates, and ominous financial transactions, all written in Julian’s sharp, aggressive handwriting.

My eyes scanned the middle pages, and the breath evacuated my lungs.

Clara Vance. Target acquisition complete. Insurance payout scheduled for Q3.

Below her name were half a dozen other entries—former estate workers, previous groundskeepers, and former junior partners who had all left our employ under sudden, scandalous, or tragic circumstances. One notation next to a former accountant’s name read: Accidental fall from balcony. Debt cleared.

Julian wasn't just a ruthless businessman. He was systematically eliminating people, using fabricated accidents and insurance fraud to bleed corporate accounts dry while destroying innocent lives to cover his tracks. Clara had been chosen as his latest scapegoat simply because she had no family to advocate for her, no financial backing to fight a wrongful termination or a criminal charge.

And the greenhouse collapse wasn't a random failure. It was a test run. A controlled destruction to gauge insurance adjusters' reactions before moving on to a much larger, darker target.

As I stared at the incriminating ink, a sudden, blinding flash of light illuminated the study behind me.
