Chapter 9 - The Labyrinth Below

We tumbled onto a bed of soft, decaying straw inside an old coal chute that sloped downward beneath the house. The hatch slammed shut automatically above us, cutting off Julian’s enraged shouting and leaving us in absolute, suffocating darkness.
“Mommy, dark...” Leo whimpered, burying his face in my neck, his small frame shaking with cold and fear.
“Shh, sweet boy, mommy’s right here,” I whispered fiercely, pressing my hand over his mouth to muffle any sound while straining my own ears to listen for movement above.
A muffled thud echoed from the ceiling near the top of the chute—Julian was searching for the manual release latch.
I scrambled to my feet in the cramped space, holding Leo tightly against my chest, and felt my way along the rough stone walls. The chute opened up into a narrow subterranean service corridor lined with old water pipes and electrical conduits. This must have been how Clara and the other staff moved unseen through the estate, or how Julian covertly accessed his hidden surveillance hubs.

I crept forward through the pitch-black labyrinth, guided only by the faint hum of copper wires and the distant dripping of water. Every shadow looked like a trap; every echo sounded like Julian’s footsteps closing in.
After what felt like miles of crawling through the damp dark, a faint beam of moonlight cut across the corridor ahead, filtering up through a heavy iron floor grate.
