Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

That night, the house was draped in a suffocating, heavy silence. Julian had fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep beside me, his breathing rhythmic and heavy. But my mind was wide awake, burning with a suspicion that refused to let me close my eyes.

Quietly, so as not to disturb him, I slipped out from under the duvet, wrapped a silk robe around my shoulders, and tiptoed out into the dimly lit hallway.

I didn't head downstairs. I headed straight for Julian’s private study—a room he kept locked with a heavy biometric deadbolt. Or at least, he thought it was locked. Years ago, before our marriage grew cold and distant, he had casually mentioned the physical override key hidden behind the heavy oil painting of his late grandfather in the dark corridor.

My fingers brushed against the cold wall, finding the edge of the heavy canvas. I lifted it slightly, and sure enough, a small brass key rested in a carved notch in the wood.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I inserted the key into the brass keyhole beneath the electronic pad. With a faint, agonizing click, the heavy mahogany door swung open.

I stepped inside, flicking on a small penlight. The beam swept across mahogany bookshelves, a leather executive desk, and a wall of historical family ledgers. But as I drew closer to the desk, I noticed something strange: a faint, metallic odor lingering in the air—the distinct scent of industrial grease and fresh metal shavings.

I crouched down beside the heavy oak kneehole and ran my hand along the underside of the desk. My fingers snagged on a hidden latch. With a soft pneumatic hiss, a concealed floor panel beneath the Persian rug popped open, revealing a dark, recessed compartment built into the concrete foundation of the mansion.
