Chapter 13 - SHADOWS RECLAIMED

Panicked shouting erupted in the dark.

"ELEVATOR DOORS ARE LOCKED FROM THE OUTSIDE!" a mercenary screamed from the foyer. "WE'RE TRAPPED!"

"GET THE NIGHT VISION ON!" Derek yelled, his voice cracking with pure terror as he blindly aimed his gun into the gloom. "ASHFORD! SHOW YOURSELF!"

Through the darkness, the low, rhythmic hum of heavy steel shutters rolling down over the floor-to-ceiling windows echoed throughout the room, sealing the ballroom into an impenetrable vault.

Then, a voice echoed through the hidden surround-sound speakers—not Gabriel’s, but Captain Thomas Callahan's.

"Don Salvatore Moretti, Detective Derek Lawson. You are currently surrounded by three tactical squads of the Massachusetts State Police and Federal Marshals. The building is completely locked under emergency protocol. Drop your weapons immediately."

Moretti’s face paled in the dim red emergency lights that flickered to life. "Callahan?! You traitorous bastard!"

"Callahan didn't betray you, Salvatore," Gabriel’s voice rang out from the darkness behind them. "He just realized that taking down a corrupt precinct and a mob syndicate makes for a much better press conference than taking down me."

Flashing red and blue lights suddenly strobed through the frosted glass doors as dozens of heavily armed State Troopers breached the side entrances, lasers painting every mercenary in the room.

"DROP THE WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"

Moretti’s men immediately threw their rifles onto the floor, raising their hands in surrender. Moretti dropped his cane, collapsing into a chair with a look of total defeat.

Only Derek Lawson refused to give up.

Driven by blind rage, Derek spun around, catching sight of Gabriel standing near the grand fireplace. He raised his pistol, screaming, "IF I'M GOING DOWN, YOU'RE COMING WITH ME!"

BANG.

A single shot echoed through the vault.

Derek gasped, dropping his gun as he stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder where a sniper round from the balcony above had shattered his collarbone.

He fell to his knees on the polished parquet floor, sobbing in agony and defeat.

Gabriel walked over to him slowly, stopping two feet away. He looked down at the bleeding, pathetic figure of the man who had once terrorized Harper for three long years.

Gabriel leaned down, his voice a low, terrifying whisper meant only for Derek’s ears.

"You are going to a maximum-security state facility, Lawson," Gabriel murmured. "And every single inmate inside knows what you did to your wife. Enjoy your new home."

State Troopers rushed forward, grabbing Derek by his arms and dragging him out of the ballroom, his screams of pain fading down the hallway.

Gabriel adjusted his cufflinks, took a deep breath, and turned toward the private elevator behind the stage.

The war for Boston was over.

Twenty minutes later, Gabriel’s Mercedes pulled up to the front courtyard of the Beacon Hill estate.

The rain had stopped. The clouds were finally parting, revealing a star-filled sky over the city.

Gabriel walked up the stone steps and pushed open the heavy oak doors.

Harper was standing in the foyer, wearing a soft cream sweater, waiting for him. When she saw him step through the door—unharmed, whole, and victorious—she let out a ragged breath and ran across the marble floor.

Gabriel caught her in his arms, lifting her off her feet as she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.

"It's over," Gabriel whispered against her hair, holding her so tightly he could feel her heart beating against his chest. "Lawson is in federal custody. Moretti's network is dismantled. You are safe, Harper. You are completely free."

Harper pulled back slightly, tears of relief shimmering in her dark eyes, and cupped his cheeks with both hands.

"We are free," she corrected softly.

Gabriel looked at her, his amber eyes filled with a peace he had never known in his thirty-two years of life. He leaned down and kissed her—a soft, deep, promising kiss under the warm light of the restored chandeliers.

The shadows of Beacon Hill were finally gone. But as Gabriel held her in the quiet grandeur of his home, he knew that protecting her, loving her, and building a future with her and Noah was a journey that had only just begun.
