Chapter 16 - ECHOES IN THE DAWN

That evening, a summer thunderstorm rolled over Boston, painting the sky in flashes of violet and silver.

In the master suite of the Beacon Hill mansion, the roaring fireplace cast a warm, flickering glow across the king-sized bed. Rain beat a soothing rhythm against the tall glass windows.

Noah was sound asleep down the hall, safe in his new room with his stuffed bear.

Harper lay in Gabriel’s arms, her head resting on his chest, listening to the heavy, steady thud of his heart. Gabriel’s large hand stroked her bare back in slow, rhythmic circles. His touch was no longer hesitant; it was possessive, gentle, and deeply affectionate.

"Are you happy, Harper?" Gabriel asked softly into the quiet room.

Harper raised her chin to look at him. "I haven't had a single nightmare in three months, Gabriel. I wake up next to you, and I feel like I'm breathing real air for the first time in my life."

Gabriel looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an intense, burning devotion. He turned on his side, towering over her on the plush mattress, his fingers gently tracing the contours of her face—her lips, her cheekbones, the faint scar above her eyebrow.

"You healed me, you know," Gabriel whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "For thirty-two years, I thought I was born to be a monster. I thought the only thing I was good for was violence and fear."

"You were never a monster, Gabriel," Harper reached up, cupping his jaw, her thumb brushing over his cheek. "You were just a protector who hadn't found what he was meant to protect."

Gabriel leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a passion that had been simmering beneath the surface for months.

It wasn't a rush of desperate fear like the nights during the war. It was slow, deep, and intoxicating—a celebration of life, safety, and mutual devotion. As Gabriel pulled her closer, his touch worshipped every inch of her body, erasing every shadow of her past with a fire that belonged only to them.

In the warmth of his arms, surrounded by the storm outside, Harper surrendered completely to the man who had become her sanctuary.
