Chapter 6 - THE MORNING AFTER THE TOAST

The penthouse suite at the Grand Continental Hotel smelled of expensive French champagne, damp rose petals, and victory.
Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the sprawling living room where empty crystal flutes and scattered take-out boxes from an elite downtown bistro littered the marble coffee table.
Chad Miller stretched luxuriously beneath the silk sheets of the king-sized bed, his bare arm wrapping around Brenda, who was still fast asleep beside him, her long blonde hair spread across the pillows. For seven long years, Chad had played the obedient, second-in-command corporate husband, swallowing his bitter envy every time someone praised Genevieve’s brilliance as the chief financial officer of Lindqvist-Tech.
Now, he felt like a king.
Two million dollars sitting quietly in a discreet Cayman Islands account, a gorgeous new partner by his side, and a compliant mother-in-law who had practically handed him full legal custody leverage over little Toby.
He slipped out of bed, pulling on a silk robe, and walked out to the private balcony to savor the crisp Phoenix morning air. He picked up his smartphone from the glass patio table, tapping the screen to check his mobile banking app. He wanted to look at the numbers just one more time—to reassure himself that the nightmare of the courthouse was over and his new empire had begun.

A small, spinning circle blinked on the screen. Then, a sharp, flashing red banner slashed across the display:
ACCOUNT FROZEN: RESTRICTED BY FEDERAL ORDER. REFERENCE: SEC-FBI JOINT TASK FORCE 104-B. AVAILABLE BALANCE: $0.00
Chad’s breath caught in his throat. He blinked hard, thinking it was a temporary glitch, a routine server maintenance hiccup. He tapped his password again, his fingers suddenly clumsy and cold.
Access Denied. Assets subject to immediate federal seizure under Title 18, United States Code.
“What... what is this?” Chad whispered, his voice cracking into a sudden, high-pitched gasp.
He frantically switched apps, trying to log into his secondary personal savings account—the one where he had stashed liquid reserves for emergency travel.
Account Frozen.
He tried his credit card. Declined.
Panic, cold and sharp as a scalpel, stabbed straight through his chest. He stumbled backward off the balcony, crashing into the bedroom door so hard it swung wide open.
“Brenda! Brenda, wake up!” Chad yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of pale gray.

Brenda groaned, pulling the sheet over her eyes. “Chad, what are you screaming about? It’s seven in the morning...”
“The accounts! All of them! They’re gone! Everything is locked!”
