Chapter 8 - REUNION IN THE EAST WING

Upstairs in the sun-drenched east wing of my father’s sprawling estate, the heavy mahogany doors kept out the panic unfolding downstairs.
I sat on the plush carpet of the playroom, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks alongside my five-year-old son, Toby. His infectious laughter filled the room, washing away the dark, suffocating memories of the courtroom handcuffs. He didn’t know about the trial, the fraud charges, or the betrayal. To him, Mommy had just come home early for a very long vacation in a big, beautiful new house.
“Look, Mommy! The dragon is going to climb the tower!” Toby giggled, holding up a plastic toy dragon and flying it toward the wooden fortress.
“Careful, sweetie, dragons are tricky,” I smiled, my eyes stinging with happy tears as I smoothed down his curly brown hair.
The door clicked open softly.
I looked up and saw my father standing in the doorway, leaning slightly on his cane. The harsh, ruthless titan of the Phoenix business world softened completely the moment his eyes landed on his grandson.
“Is everything proceeding according to plan, Father?” I asked quietly, making sure Toby was still distracted by his blocks.
Christopher walked slowly across the rug, lowering himself carefully into an armchair nearby.
“Marcus just confirmed that the federal agents have secured your mother’s estate,” Christopher said, his voice low and steady. “The forged documents used to sell your townhouse have been recovered from her private safe. Her own signature is all over the wire instructions. She won't be able to buy her way out of this one.”
A heavy weight lifted from my chest. For years, my mother had ruled our family through emotional manipulation and quiet intimidation, making me feel small and powerless. Now, her own greed had become the very trap that ensnared her.
“And Chad?” I asked.
“Chad is currently experiencing his very first taste of absolute insolvency,” Christopher’s lips curved into a thin, satisfied smile. “His accounts are completely frozen, his credit cards are rejected, and his fancy penthouse suite is calling the front desk demanding payment for yesterday's champagne. He is trapped in a gilded cage with no key.”
I looked back down at Toby, who was now carefully placing a tiny knight figurine on top of the castle tower.

“He’s going to try to contact me,” I murmured. “He’ll realize soon enough that I’m the only one who can sign off on the corporate audit clearance to release the escrow.”
“Let him try,” Christopher replied, his gaze sharpening into steel. “When he calls, you won't be the frightened, cornered wife he left behind at the courthouse. You will be Genevieve Lindqvist—the rightful heir to everything he tried to steal.”
