Chapter 11 - THE MORETTI SHADOW

The Mercer Global tower stood seventy stories tall in the heart of the financial district—a towering obelisk of dark blue glass and steel. For a decade, Marcus Mercer had walked through its brass revolving doors as an absolute monarch.
Today, he walked in as a ghost.
By 10:00 AM, two private security officers stood beside the main turnstiles. As Marcus tapped his executive keycard against the reader, the scanner let out a sharp, double red beep.
ACCESS DENIED.
Marcus stared at the digital pad, his face flushed with embarrassment. "I am the Chief Executive Officer," he snapped, glaring at the head guard. "Override the lock."
"I can't do that, Mr. Mercer," the guard replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "By order of the interim board and the primary equity receiver, your access privileges have been suspended pending the internal audit."
"Primary equity receiver?" Marcus demanded, his voice cracking. "Who authorized an interim board?!"
The glass doors of the executive elevator chimed, sliding open with a soft hiss.
Gabriel Moretti stepped out onto the marble lobby floor. He was flanked by three forensic accountants carrying silver cases and two high-powered corporate litigators. Gabriel adjusted his silver cufflinks, looking down at Marcus with cold, detached precision.
"I authorized it, Marcus," Gabriel said smoothly, stepping past the turnstiles. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Moretti Investment Trust executed a forced buyout of the forty-two percent equity stake previously pledged by Arthur Vance. Combined with the fifteen percent proxy vote granted by the minority shareholders, we now hold controlling interest in Mercer Global."
Marcus took a step back, his hands trembling. "You can't do this... this is a hostile takeover! I built this company!"
"You built a house of cards on top of my sister's pain," Gabriel corrected, pulling a thick leather folder from under his arm. "And then you allowed a thief to bleed it dry while you looked the other way. Your office on the seventieth floor is being cleared right now. Your personal items will be delivered to your townhouse by three o'clock."
"And if I refuse to leave?" Marcus growled, trying to stand tall despite the sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Gabriel leaned in close, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register. "If you stay in this lobby for another sixty seconds, the federal marshals currently upstairs will serve you with a subpoena regarding the three shell corporations Isabella set up using your forged signature. You might want to spend your remaining free hours finding a criminal defense lawyer who doesn't mind getting paid in deferred IOUs."
May you like
Marcus gasped, his chest heaving as the reality of his position crushed him. He looked around the vast marble lobby. Employees who had once bowed their heads in deference were now staring at him, whispering behind their phones, watching the great Marcus Mercer get turned away at his own front door.
Without another word, Marcus turned on his heel and stumbled out into the pouring rain.
