Chapter 16 - THE FINAL VERDICT

Six months after the night in VIP Room 412, the Federal Courthouse in the city center was surrounded by television news crews, satellite vans, and crowds of spectators.
The trial of United States v. Isabella Vance & Arthur Vance had captivated the nation. What began as a high-society corporate scandal had unravelled into a massive federal conspiracy case involving corporate espionage, attempted murder, money laundering, and municipal corruption.
Inside Courtroom 302, the air was dense and quiet.
Isabella Vance sat at the defense table beside a court-appointed public defender. Her once-glamourous appearance was entirely gone. Wearing a plain navy blue detention jumpsuit, her hair tied back simply, she sat with her shoulders hunched, staring blankly at the dark wood of the table. Beside her, her uncle Arthur looked hollow and aged, his head bowed.
Across the aisle, Luca Moretti sat as the chief legal representative for the civil co-prosecution, flanked by Gabriel and Julian.
In the front row of the gallery sat Khloe, wearing an elegant ivory wool suit. Beside her, Dominic’s imposing presence offered an unspoken, unshakeable wall of protection.
Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation) knocked her gavel twice against the wooden block.
"Will the jury foreperson please read the verdict?"
A tall man in the jury box stood up, unfolding a white piece of paper.
"On Count One, attempted murder in the second degree against Khloe Mercer: We find the defendant, Isabella Vance... guilty."
A soft gasp rippled through the gallery. Isabella didn't move. She simply stared straight ahead as if the word belonged to someone else.
"On Count Two, grand corporate embezzlement and wire fraud: We find the defendant, Isabella Vance... guilty."
"On Count Three, conspiracy to commit murder: We find the defendant, Arthur Vance... guilty."
The foreperson read through all twenty-four counts. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.
Judge Vance leaned forward over her bench, looking down at Isabella and Arthur with stern, unyielding eyes.
"Isabella Vance," the judge declared, her voice echoing clearly off the wood paneling, "for your calculated, ruthless actions that nearly claimed the lives of an innocent woman and her unborn child, you are sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Arthur Vance, you are sentenced to eighteen years."
BANG.
The gavel fell like a guillotine.
Federal marshals stepped forward, placing heavy steel cuffs around Isabella’s wrists. As she was led toward the side holding door, she turned her head one last time to look at Khloe.

Khloe met her gaze calmly, without anger, without triumph, and without fear.
Isabella swallowed hard, her eyes filling with tears of pure, unadulterated defeat, before the heavy door clicked shut behind her forever.
