Chapter 17 - THE FALLEN TITAN
While the courtroom emptied, miles away in a modest, suburban one-bedroom apartment, Marcus Mercer sat alone at a small laminate kitchen table.
The room was silent except for the low hum of an old refrigerator.
The man who had once commanded a net worth of hundreds of millions of dollars now lived on a modest monthly allowance granted by the court-ordered corporate liquidation. His luxury penthouse was gone. His sports cars were auctioned off. His high-society friends had long deleted his number from their phones.
On the table sat a single, framed photograph from five years ago: Khloe, laughing on a beach in Hawaii, her eyes bright with trust and love.
Beside the frame lay an official letter from the State Vital Statistics office:
CERTIFICATE OF AMENDMENT: NAME CHANGE AND PARENTAL RIGHTS DISCHARGE APPROVED.
His daughter’s name was legally Maya Moretti. His name appeared nowhere on the birth certificate.
Marcus picked up his television remote and clicked the screen on. The local news anchor was reporting live from the federal courthouse steps:
"...with Isabella Vance sentenced to twenty-eight years, Mercer Global has officially been rebranded as Moretti Heritage Enterprises under the leadership of new CEO Khloe Moretti..."
Marcus stared at the screen.
There was Khloe, walking down the stone courthouse steps surrounded by her five brothers. She looked breathtaking—confident, powerful, and utterly whole.

A heavy sob tore through Marcus’s chest. He dropped his head onto the cold table, clutching the framed photograph of the woman he had failed to protect, weeping in the quiet, empty apartment that was now his entire world.
He had traded a queen for a viper, and now he had nothing left but shadows.
