Chapter 12 - THE SECRET THEY HID IN MY DAUGHTER

The phone call changed everything. Until that moment, I had believed the fight was about money, ownership, and revenge. I had thought Scott wanted the company because he had become greedy and Vanessa wanted the life I had built because she envied me. But the moment I heard the words “find the child,” the pieces shifted into a pattern I didn't want to see. Lily was only eight months old. She had never signed a contract, never inherited a business, never spoken to an investor, and had never even taken a step inside the company. There was no logical reason for a powerful man who had supposedly been dead for fifteen years to care about her. Unless Lily wasn't important because of who she was now. Unless she was important because of what she would become.
My phone rang before I could leave the building.
Detective Shaw.
I answered immediately.
“Diane, where is Lily?”
“With me.”
“Keep her with you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“We found something in the original corporate records.”
“What?”
There was a pause.
“Your daughter's birth records.”
I stopped walking.
“What about them?”
“The original hospital file doesn't match the amended one.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“Someone changed the records.”
“Changed them to what?”
The detective hesitated.
“That's the problem.”
I felt a chill move through me.
“What?”
“The original father field was altered.”
I looked through the glass wall toward the parking lot where Lily was waiting with my friend.
“Scott's name was on it.”
“No.”
Her voice became quiet.
“His name wasn't the original one.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Then whose was it?”
“We're still verifying it.”
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was asleep in her car seat, her tiny hand curled around the edge of her blanket.
Everything I knew about her had suddenly become uncertain.
I drove directly to the hospital where Evelyn was recovering.
She looked exhausted when I entered the room.
But the moment she saw my face, she knew.
“You found something.”
I sat beside her.
“What is Lily?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“She is the reason they never let you go.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn reached for my hand.
“Diane, I wanted to tell you everything.”
“Then tell me now.”
She looked toward the door.
“Scott was never supposed to know.”
“Know what?”
“That Lily wasn't part of the plan.”
My heart started pounding.
“What plan?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“The trust.”
I remembered the documents.
The 51-percent ownership.
The hidden structure.
The clause that would eventually transfer control to my direct heir.
“You're saying Lily inherits the company?”
“Not just the company.”
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“The trust behind it.”
I stared at her.
“What trust?”
“Your father created it before you married Scott.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because he knew someone would try to take it.”
“Who?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“Richard.”
The name hit me.
Scott's supposed father.
The man who had been sitting in the office that morning.
I stood.
“Why does he want Lily?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.
“Because when Lily turns one, the trust activates.”
I felt the room spin.
“And then?”
“Control passes to her.”
I looked toward the hospital window.
Eight months.
Only four months remained until Lily's first birthday.
Then Evelyn grabbed my wrist.
“Diane.”
I looked back.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
She swallowed.
“Scott isn't Lily's biological father.”
The room went completely silent.
I stared at her.
“No.”
“I wish that were a lie.”
“Then who is?”
Evelyn opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the hospital door burst open.
Detective Shaw rushed inside.
“Diane, we have a problem.”
I stood.
“What happened?”
May you like
She looked directly at me.
“Someone tried to take Lily.”
