Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO OWNED MY HUSBAND

That night, I didn't sleep.
I sat beside Lily's hotel bed with Evelyn's documents spread across the table. Every page revealed another lie. Every signature opened another door. The company Scott had built wasn't really his. The money he had accumulated wasn't entirely his. Even the attorney who had promised to protect me had been helping him move pieces into place.
But there was one name that appeared repeatedly.
Marcus Hale.
At first, I thought he was another investor.
Then I found his photograph.
He was standing beside Scott at a private event.
Beside Vanessa.
Beside Daniel.
And beside Evelyn's late husband.
I called the detective.
"Who is Marcus Hale?"
There was silence on the other end.
Then he said,
"Where did you find that name?"
"In Evelyn's documents."
His voice changed.
"Don't contact him."
"Why?"
"Because we believe he's the person financing Scott."
I looked at Lily.
"How powerful is he?"
The detective paused.
"Powerful enough that Scott isn't acting alone."
I opened another document.
It was a list of payments.
Millions of dollars had moved between Scott's company, Daniel's law firm, and several offshore entities.
At the bottom was one final transaction.
$812,463.70.
The exact amount Evelyn had given me.
But the payment date was fifteen years earlier.
I stared at the number.
The money hadn't been Evelyn's.
It had originally come from my company.
My hands went cold.
She hadn't stolen money to save me.
She had taken back money that Scott had stolen from me years ago.
Suddenly the front door of the hotel room clicked.
I froze.
Lily was asleep.
I reached for my phone.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Then came three quiet knocks.
I didn't answer.
The knocks came again.
"Diane."
I recognized the voice.
Daniel Mercer.
My attorney.
I stepped backward.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to protect you."
I almost laughed.
"You've done enough protecting."
There was silence.
Then his voice dropped.
"You don't understand what you've found."
"I understand that you helped my husband steal my company."
"I didn't know the whole plan."
"You signed the documents."
"I was trying to keep you alive."
The words stopped me.
"What?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Scott wasn't the one giving the orders."
My heart began pounding.
"Then who was?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he whispered,
"Open the door, Diane."
I stayed where I was.
"No."
His voice became urgent.
"If you don't open this door, they will come for Lily tonight."
I looked at my daughter.
Then I heard footsteps in the hallway behind Daniel.
More than one person.
Daniel whispered,
"They found you."
The lights in the hotel room suddenly went out.
Lily woke up crying.
I grabbed her and held her against my chest.
Outside the door, someone tried the handle.
Then another voice spoke.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
"Daniel, step away from the door."
Daniel immediately went silent.
I knew that voice.
Scott.
But he wasn't alone.
A second voice came from the hallway.
An older man's voice.
"Bring Diane to me."
I stared at the locked door.
The detective had told me Marcus Hale was powerful.
But that wasn't Marcus Hale's voice.
It was someone else.
Someone I had known for fifteen years.
Someone who had been standing in my house while I built the company he planned to steal.
I looked down at Lily.
Then I finally understood the truth Evelyn had tried to protect me from.
Scott wasn't the mastermind.
May you like
He was only the man they had placed beside me.
And whoever was standing outside my hotel room had been controlling my husband from the very beginning.
