Chapter 19 - THE LAST ENEMY
The next twenty minutes were chaos. Security teams searched every corridor while Detective Shaw locked down the building, but I could barely hear anything over the sound of my own heartbeat. Lily had disappeared from a secured room surrounded by armed officers, cameras, and locked doors. Whoever had taken her hadn't broken in. They had walked through the building as if they belonged there. Then Shaw found something beneath Lily's empty blanket. A silver key. The same key from the suitcase. Attached to it was a handwritten note.
“Bring the original trust to the old garage.”
I knew immediately what that meant.
The garage where Scott and I had started our company fifteen years earlier.
The place where my father had first met Richard.
The place where Adrian had supposedly staged the photograph.
I went there alone.
Inside, the old building smelled exactly as it had when I was young, but everything felt wrong. The walls were empty. The workbench was covered in dust. The old company sign still hung crookedly above the office door. Then I heard Lily crying somewhere beneath the floor. I ran toward the sound and found a hidden staircase leading underground. At the bottom was a small room filled with old boxes, photographs, and financial records. Lily was sitting safely inside a padded crib, watched by a man standing in the shadows.
He stepped into the light.
Adrian Cross.
Older than the photograph.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.
“Why Lily?”
Adrian smiled.
“Because your father knew what she would inherit.”
“She inherited the trust.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“She inherited something far more valuable.”
He opened an old metal box.
Inside were documents bearing my father's signature.
Then he placed one final paper in front of me.
It was dated twenty years earlier.
My father's handwriting was unmistakable.
“Adrian,” I whispered.
“He wasn't your father's enemy.”
Adrian smiled.
“He was his partner.”
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
“What?”
Adrian looked toward Lily.
“Your father and I built the trust together.”
“Then why did he hide you?”
“Because he discovered what I planned to do with it.”
I stared at him.
“What did you plan?”
Adrian's smile vanished.
“To control the company.”
He pointed toward Lily.
“And eventually, everything she inherited.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Detective Shaw appeared with federal agents behind him.
Adrian looked at me.
Then he laughed.
“You brought them here.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked toward the hidden camera above the doorway.
“I brought you.”
Adrian's face changed.
For the first time, he realized he had walked into a trap.
