Chapter 16 - THE MAN RICHARD FEARED

The night Marcus appeared beside my mother should have been the night everything finally made sense. Instead, it became the beginning of the most terrifying discovery of my life. Marcus told me that Richard had spent years searching for the trust my father created, and that Lily was the final key to unlocking it, but there was one detail he had never told me. Richard had not created the plan. He had inherited it. He had simply been the man arrogant enough to believe he could control it. My mother brought the old brown suitcase onto the dining table and stared at it for several seconds before finally touching the hidden zipper beneath the lining. Her hands were trembling. She had known about that compartment for fifteen years, but she had never opened it because Evelyn had made her promise that it would remain sealed until Lily was old enough to become the legal beneficiary. Inside was a black envelope, a silver key, several original documents, and an old photograph of my father standing beside another man whose face had been scratched out with a blade. On the back of the photograph were four words that made my stomach twist.

“Never trust the first enemy.”

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned the photograph over again.

“Richard wasn't the first enemy.”

My mother began to cry.

“He wasn't even the person your father feared most.”

Before I could ask another question, the house lights went out.

Lily started crying in my arms.

Marcus moved toward the window and looked outside.

“There are cars.”

I heard engines approaching from the road.

Then my mother's phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice came through the darkness.

“Evelyn should have burned the suitcase.”

My mother froze.

I felt every muscle in my body tighten.

The voice continued.

“Richard was always useful.”

A pause.

“But he was never important.”

The call ended.

Marcus looked at me.

And suddenly, the man who had terrified us for months sounded like nothing more than a pawn.
