Chapter 14 - The Last Confession

The letter was dated just three days before my father’s death. His handwriting was shakier than usual, penned with the slow, deliberate care of a man who knew his time was running out.

“Abigail,” it read.

“If you are holding this, the federal audit is complete, and you have survived the storm. You proved yourself a true attorney and a true daughter of this house. But there is one final detail you must know about the night of my accident—something I did not put in the primary notebooks to protect you while the investigation was active.

Gertrude didn’t act alone fourteen months ago. She had a silent partner inside the corporate banking sector—a man named Julian Vance, who helped orchestrate the initial routing numbers for Bellwether before Brandon took over the operation. Julian believed he was untouchable because he held the master encryption keys to the secondary bank accounts.

Those keys are no longer a threat. They are located inside the false bottom of the antique globe in the library. Use them to lock the remaining overseas loopholes once and for all. Do not let the shadow of the past dictate your future. You are the architect now.”

I lowered the letter, the paper trembling slightly in my hand. Julian Vance. A name I hadn't heard in years—a distant cousin of Brandon’s who had vanished into the corporate ether right before the federal indictments dropped.

Marcus watched my expression change. “What is it?”

“The trap wasn't just for Brandon and Gertrude,” I said softly, standing up from the desk. “There was a co-conspirator. Someone holding the master keys to the overseas accounts.”

Marcus’s eyes widened slightly. “Julian Vance.”

“And according to my father,” I said, walking toward the door, “the keys are sitting right here in the library.”
