Chapter 15 - The Library Globe

We moved quickly through the darkened corridors of the estate, the storm outside picking up intensity as wind lashed against the glass panes.
The library was untouched by time, smelling of old leather, cedarwood, and polished mahogany. In the far corner stood the 19th-century mahogany globe my father had inherited from his grandfather. For decades, it had been a decorative centerpiece, spinning lazily on its brass axis whenever guests walked past.
I approached it, resting my hands on the faded paper map of a world that no longer existed.
“How do we open it?” Marcus asked, shining his phone flashlight onto the wooden base.
“My father liked symmetry,” I murmured. I traced my fingers along the brass meridian ring, feeling for a hidden seam. Near the carved wooden horizon, my thumb pressed against a small brass peg representing the Prime Meridian.
Click.
The lower hemisphere of the globe unlatched with a smooth, pneumatic hiss, swinging open on hidden hinges.
Inside wasn't paper or gold. It was a compact, militar-grade hardware token—a physical security key encoded with biometric encryption, alongside a micro-cassette recorder labeled simply: Julian’s Leverage.
I pulled the hardware token out, feeling its cold metal weight, and handed it to Marcus.
“Is this what I think it is?” Marcus asked, staring at the flashing blue LED light on the token.
“It’s the master administrative key to every offshore subsidiary Julian and Brandon used to launder money,” I said, my voice steady and resolute. “With this plugged into the federal treasury portal, we can freeze their remaining international assets before Julian even realizes we know his name.”

Before Marcus could reply, the house’s automated security console near the library door let out a sharp, digital chime.
