Chapter 12 - The Hospital Siege

The heavy iron fire door of the stairwell slammed open with a metallic crash that echoed sharply through the quiet confines of the fourth-floor intensive care wing. Heavy, calculated boots struck the linoleum floor in unison—rhythmic, disciplined, and utterly relentless.
“FBI Hostage Rescue Team! Clear the corridor!” a harsh voice bellowed through a tactical megaphone, followed immediately by the harsh clack of assault rifles being unslung and switched to full auto.
Inside Room 404, I stood frozen for a split second, my hand resting gently on Nora’s forehead. Her breathing remained steady, muffled by the deep medical sedatives keeping her pain at bay. They weren't coming to rescue her; they were coming to execute a sanitization protocol disguised as a lawful tactical raid, ordered by a federal bench completely bought and paid for by The Meridian Group.
I slipped my hand into my jacket pocket, gripping the heavy black Vanguard challenge coin one last time before dropping it onto the bedside table. Then, I turned and drew the suppressed pistol I had taken from the syndicate operative minutes earlier.
“Commander, you’re completely surrounded,” Major Bishop’s voice crackled quietly through my encrypted earpiece, filtered through heavy static as a local electronic-warfare van jammed the hospital’s primary frequencies. “The tactical teams outside have locked down every exit vector. If you step out into that hallway, they aren't going to read you your rights.”
“I’m not stepping out into their hallway, Bishop,” I whispered back, my eyes fixed on the reinforced glass observation window of the room. “I’m bringing the fight to them.”

I kicked open the heavy wooden door of Room 404 just as the lead federal tactical operator raised his rifle barrel toward the threshold. Moving with the blinding speed of a tier-one black-ops veteran, I fired two precise, non-lethal suppressing rounds directly into the wall-mounted emergency fire sprinklers above their heads.
Instantly, thousands of gallons of pressurized water burst downward, flooding the corridor in a blinding, chaotic cascade of artificial rain and thick, swirling steam. Shouting in confusion, the tactical team broke formation, stumbling blindly through the slick hallway as I slipped past them into the shadows of the maintenance service elevator shaft.
