Chapter 1 - THE BUTTONS ON THE MARBLE

The grand drawing room of the Whitmore Estate smelled of aged mahogany, imported lilies, and centuries of inherited wealth. Located in the exclusive hills of Greenwich, Connecticut, the estate was a fortress of limestone and glass—a physical testament to seventy-five years of the Whitmore family’s unbroken dominance over eastern shipping and private equity.
Richard Whitmore, seventy-five years old, stood near the mahogany library doors, holding a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. Age had silvered his hair and lined his face, but his eyes remained sharp, steady, and perceptive.
Standing several feet away near the marble fireplace was Sophia—a twenty-eight-year-old former interior decorator who had managed, through months of delicate maneuvering, to marry Richard’s youngest son, Ethan, six months prior. To the public, she was soft-spoken, graceful, and devoted.
Inside the quiet room, however, no one else was present.
Richard had never touched her. He hadn't even stepped within five feet of her. He had simply handed her an envelope containing an audit report—proof that she had been quietly funneling funds from the family’s charitable foundation into an unlisted account in the Cayman Islands.
"It ends tonight, Sophia," Richard said, his voice quiet, deep, and devoid of anger. "You will pack your personal belongings, you will sign an unconditional annulment agreement, and you will leave this house before breakfast tomorrow. Ethan doesn't need to know the full extent of what you've done unless you force my hand."
Sophia didn't answer immediately. She looked at the heavy oak doors leading out to the main hallway, confirming the faint echoes of footsteps approaching from the dining room.
Her lips curved into a cold, almost imperceptible smile.
Slowly, deliberately, Sophia reached up with trembling hands and messed up her styled blonde hair, pulling several strands loose over her forehead. Next, she grabbed the front of her tailored silk blouse and yanked hard.
SNAP. SNAP. SNAP.
Three mother-of-pearl buttons tore from the fabric, bouncing off her chest and scattering across the polished marble floor.
Richard stared at her in absolute disbelief, his glass freezing inches from his desk. "Sophia… what are you doing?"
Sophia didn't hesitate. She took three swift steps backward, slamming her back against the edge of a glass display cabinet. She wrapped her arms tightly around her chest, threw her head back, and let out a blood-curdling, hysterical shriek.
"HELP! GET AWAY FROM ME! Ethan! HELP ME!"

Tears spilled down her cheeks in a instant, hot and desperate, as her shoulders began to shake violently.
The heavy mahogany doors flew open.
