Chapter 15 - THE CHECKMATE

"It doesn't matter," Sophia suddenly laughed, a sharp, unhinged sound that echoed off the glass walls. She picked up her leather document portfolio, pulling out a slim, encrypted tablet. "It's 2:45 PM. The pre-authorization transfer Ethan signed last night is already processing through the European clearing house. The forty billion dollars is routing to S. Laurent Holdings as we speak!"

She tapped the screen rapidly, expecting to see the green confirmation light of completed wire transfers.

Instead, a flashing red warning banner covered the display:

TRANSACTION HALTED: INVALID AUTHORIZATION CODE [ERROR 909 - FOUNDER OVERRIDE REQUIRED].

Sophia’s fingers froze on the glass screen. Her face turned pale. "What... what is this?"

"I told you on Tuesday night, Sophia," Richard said, stepping around the table until he was standing just three feet away from her. "You played a good game with those buttons. But you forgot who built the floor they fell on."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding a tablet synced directly to the Federal Reserve portal.

"In 2018," Marcus explained smoothly, "Richard Whitmore embedded Clause 14 into the founder's charter. Any offshore transaction exceeding one billion dollars initiated by a proxy Chairman requires the physical biometric authorization of the original founder before funds can exit the domestic clearinghouse."

Richard reached out and picked up the blue-bound merger document Ethan had signed the night before.

"Ethan’s signature alone is useless without mine," Richard said softly. "You spent six months manipulating my son to steal forty billion dollars, Sophia. But you never had the keys to the vault."

Two heavy knocks sounded at the boardroom doors.

The doors opened, and four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Unit stepped into the room, accompanied by two federal prosecutors.

"Sophia Vance, also known as Sophia Whitmore," the lead agent announced, pulling a warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."

Sophia stood frozen, her tablet slipping from her fingers and crashing onto the hardwood floor—shattering into a dozen pieces right beside Ethan’s feet.
