Chapter 14 - THE CORNERED PREDATOR

The air inside the boardroom became suffocatingly heavy.
The soft, fragile posture that Sophia had maintained for six months completely dissolved. The tears in her eyes dried instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating glare that made the board members near her shrink back in their seats.
Slowly, Sophia let go of Ethan’s arm. She pulled her hand back, crossing her arms over her chest, a bitter, contemptuous smile spreading across her lips.
"Julian Vance was your father's business partner," Sophia said, her voice dropping its soft demeanor, replacing it with a sharp, razor-like cadence. "Your father ruined him eight years ago. He froze his accounts, leaked his private records to the Swiss authorities, and drove him to take his own life in a Zurich hotel room."
"Your father was a thief, Sophia," Richard stated flatly. "He embezzled eighty million dollars from our clients' retirement funds. I didn't ruin him; his own greed destroyed him."
"He was my father!" Sophia hissed, slamming her palm onto the mahogany table. "And you left his family with nothing! You sat in your Greenwich mansion while my mother had to sell her jewelry just to pay for my tuition!"
She turned her icy gaze onto Ethan, who was staring at her as if she were a complete stranger.

"And you," Sophia sneered at Ethan, her voice dripping with absolute disgust. "You were so easy, Ethan. So desperately insecure, so hungry to prove you were better than your father that all I had to do was smile, stroke your ego, and give you someone to hate. You handed me the keys to this entire firm because you were too blind to realize nobody actually respected you."
Ethan stumbled back a step, hitting his leather executive chair, looking completely destroyed. The realization that his entire romance, his corporate victory, and his heroic defense of his wife were all part of a brutal, cold-blooded calculation shattered him from the inside out.
