Inside the briefcase lay a stack of encrypted microcassettes, a ledger written entirely in code, and a heavy iron key with an embossed crest matching the seal of the state judiciary.
“This isn't just about financial embezzlement,” Mr. Bell said, sliding his glasses up his nose as he examined the ledger under the desk lamp. “Clara wasn't just an accountant. She discovered that Eleanor’s husband didn’t die of natural causes—he was executed by a secret tribunal when he tried to expose a massive land-grab conspiracy involving the state supreme court.”
Sarah leaned over the desk, her face pale. “And the person running that tribunal...?”
“Judge Harrison,” a voice answered from the doorway.

They all spun around. Standing in the study threshold was a tall, silver-haired man leaning heavily on a polished cane. He wore an immaculate wool overcoat, and his eyes carried the cold, calculating authority of a man who had never lost a battle in his life. It was Chief Justice Harrison himself—the man supposedly locked away in a federal penitentiary two states away.
“You shouldn't have opened that case, Mr. Bell,” the judge said smoothly, stepping into the room. “It ruins the symmetry of history.”
