Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

Mr. Bell slowly stood up, placing himself between Judge Harrison and the two females. “How did you get out? The federal marshals—”

“Federal marshals answer to a system of laws,” Harrison interrupted with a thin, mocking smile. “A system I helped construct brick by brick. Did you really think a few low-level indictments could dismantle fifty years of absolute power?”

From the shadows behind the judge, two masked figures stepped into the study, holding heavy zip-ties and industrial trash bags. The air in the room grew suffocatingly thick.

Sophie whimpered, gripping the edge of the desk. “You’re the man from the photographs in Mommy’s drawer.”

Harrison’s expression softened into something chillingly patronizing. “Ah, little Sophie. You have your mother’s sharp eyes. If only she had learned when to look away, she’d still be enjoying the scenery.”

He motioned to the masked men. “Tie them up. Burn the house down to the foundation. Make it look like a tragic electrical fault, just like the old days.”

As the men advanced, Mr. Bell lunged forward with the heavy iron key, swinging it like a weapon, but a swift blow to his shoulder sent him crashing against the bookshelf.
