Chapter 1 - The Sound on the Kitchen Tile

The heavy wooden hockey stick struck Grace across the shoulder before she could pull Lily out of the way. She collapsed to her knees on the cold kitchen tile, wrapping her trembling body completely around the terrified four-year-old.

“Please,” Grace gasped, fighting for breath. “Don’t hurt my child.”

Victoria stood over them in her spotless white designer dress, her knuckles white as she tightened her grip around the stick. A cold, cruel smile twisted her lips.

“Dead people keep secrets,” Victoria whispered softly.

She raised the stick high above her head once more.

Before she could bring it swinging down, the front door clicked open.

Nathan Cole stepped into the kitchen and froze.

His fiancée was standing over the bruised maid he had hired just three months ago. Grace was trembling on the floor in her black-and-white uniform, shielding a sobbing little girl beneath her body.

Victoria’s face drained of color instantly. The hockey stick slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the tile.

“Nathan…” she stammered, her voice shaking.

Lily slowly lifted her tear-covered face from Grace’s chest. She locked her large, innocent eyes directly onto Nathan.

“Daddy…”

Nathan felt his heart stop. He stood paralyzed, unable to take a single step. He had never heard the child speak to anyone like that before.

Grace raised her head, gritting her teeth against種のsearing pain in her shoulder. “She’s your daughter, Nathan.”

In that single second, Nathan’s perfect world shattered into pieces.

The woman he was set to marry in two weeks had just brutally attacked the secret mother of a daughter he never knew existed. But the truth was far darker than Grace’s years of silence. Five years earlier, someone powerful had forced Grace to vanish without a trace. Nathan’s late father had threatened to ruin her life, strip away her custody, and ensure Nathan would never learn the truth. And he hadn't acted alone.

Nathan was about to discover that his entire life—his engagement, his multi-million-dollar inheritance, and his company—was built on a cold, calculated pact between two powerful families. Grace had hidden Lily out of sheer terror. Victoria wanted the child gone because Lily was the ultimate threat to the empire she expected to control.

Now, Nathan faced an impossible choice: protect his family's legacy, or fight for the daughter whose childhood had been stolen from him.
