Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

By midnight, Victoria had packed her belongings and stormed out, her parting threat hanging in the damp air like a curse: “You think you control this empire, Nathan? Without my family’s backing, you’re just a orphan sitting on stolen land.”

Grace and Lily were settled in the guest suite upstairs. A local family doctor had examined Grace’s shoulder, confirming severe bruising and a hairline fracture, but thankfully, Lily was physically unharmed.

Nathan sat alone in his late father’s massive mahogany study, the amber glow of the desk lamp casting long shadows across the walls. He felt sick to his stomach. Five years ago, Grace had simply vanished from his life overnight. He had searched for months, but his father, Arthur Cole, had intervened, presenting him with a signed letter stating that Grace had taken a cash payout and fled the state to erase their brief college romance.

Now, looking through the financial ledgers of the Cole Corporation, Nathan realized his father’s letter had been a total fabrication.

A knock echoed softly at the heavy oak door.

Marcus Thorne, the Cole family’s senior legal counsel for thirty years, stepped into the room. He looked tired, his silver hair unkempt, carrying a thick, yellowed manila envelope sealed with a red wax stamp.

“You shouldn’t have dismissed Victoria so quickly, Nathan,” Marcus murmured, closing the door firmly behind him. “Her father controls thirty percent of our corporate supply chain. He won't take this humiliation quietly.”

“Let him try,” Nathan replied coldly. “He helped cover up the fact that my father drove Grace away and hid my child for five years. They treated a human being like a loose end in a corporate merger.”

Marcus sighed deeply, stepping up to the desk. He placed the heavy envelope down on the polished wood.

“Your father was a ruthless man, Nathan. But he wasn’t entirely blind to the monster he created in Victoria’s family,” Marcus said softly. “Before he died, he gave me strict instructions. If you ever discovered the truth about Grace and Lily, I was to hand this to you.”

Nathan looked at the envelope. “What is it?”

“Your father’s final insurance policy,” Marcus whispered, leaning in close. “Four words that changed everything.”
